It is the primordial meaning of phenomenology’ (80:399). What is most reasonable to conclude is that this ‘tautological’ thinking, this primordial phenomenological thinking that holds in view ‘presenc(ing): presencing itself,’ is none other than thinking about Being – Being itself, Being as Being – the focal point of all Four Seminars – and indeed, the focal point of Heidegger’s lifetime of thought. The protocol tells us further that when Heidegger finished speaking there was ‘silence’ among the members of the group.

Heidegger’s letter in the German and an earlier English translation (unsigned) appeared over thirty years ago in Research in Phenomenology 7 (1977): 1–4. There are several imprecisions in this earlier translation; the letter is also formatted differently. 5 In this context, the phrase ‘the being of beings’ (Sein des Seienden) in this line means more precisely the beingness of beings (die Seiendheit des Seienden), the core concern of metaphysical questioning from its origins. For Heidegger, the fundamental task for thought is to think ‘Being itself’ (das Sein selbst) – that is, the Being of beings in their beingness.

He expresses this paratactically in the following way: ‘Being: Nothing: The Same’ (58:363). ’ Being is ‘the appropriating event [das Ereignis] of Being [that is, as belonging to Being] as condition for the arrival of beings: Being lets beings come to presence [das Sein läßt das Seiende anwesen]’ (59:363). This line of thinking is perfectly clear: Being as origin (Ursprung) as appropriating event (Ereignis) lets all beings appear or become present. He adds another layer to his understanding of Being: It is a matter here of understanding that the deepest meaning of Being is letting [das Lassen].
