Their own fathers, although identified as influential, seemed to serve as the antithesis of who they wanted to be as fathers. Their uncertainty was compounded by generational changes in the standards for being a good father, which appeared to prevent many men from making reference to models in the previous generation.

This experience had both positive and negative implications for the research. On a positive note, it was a source of "theoretical sensitivity" that stimulated the generation of concepts and their relationships (Strauss & Corbin, 1990).
