The most obvious problem that studies using this approach share is that the proxies might not reflect the extent and nature of patronage practices, as they measure different aspects of the rate of employment in the state administration. They focus on how many people are employed, a figure that might be influenced by more than just the ability and likelihood of parties to make appointments.

A similar approach has been used by Li and Walder (2001) in their study of patronage in China, and by Pappas (2009b) in his investigation of the nature and mechanics of party patronage in Greece. This method of estimating the extent of patronage clearly gets to the heart of the issue by asking the respondents if their party affiliation was in any way connected to getting the jobs they have. However, the approach might also produce biased estimates of how big the phenomenon is, as it includes only a small fraction of the potential recipients of patronage appointments.
