It will always be a place for the practice of my writing. When starting out, however, just as the novice runner finds each step painful, keeping a writing journal may feel more like a chore. Many things will get in the way of it. The blocks discussed in this book will come into play. Indeed, one of the first tasks of the writing journal might be to explore what makes it so difficult to keep going with it (perhaps using some of the exercises below). As with the runner, though there will always be days when it will feel like an impossible task, with commitment and regular application to it, keeping a writing journal will get easier.

Physical space conducive to how we write. For me this is a demarcated space, a room, where I have a computer and a rocking chair (where I sit to read or write longhand) and shelves for my books. It is quiet, I can close the door on the rest of the house. For you the physical space could be a different one. Perhaps you like writing in a library or a café or on the move in a train. There are downsides to this. For instance, a library may not always be open; in a café your need to write may not be taken seriously and friends may assume it is OK to interrupt you; if you are going to do all your writing on a train, it’s going to get pretty expensive.
