As I had come from the stuffy confines of government in Ottawa, it was a revelation to meet such a vibrant minister who arrived at work on her bicycle, would join us for a coffee break and was sometimes accompanied by her preschool child. The seven years during which we built AMAP were the most rewarding of my working life. This is absolutely essential because many of the pollutants of greatest concern are measured at (and may have toxicity at) levels of parts per billion or even parts per trillion.

It was the first of many projects where funding has been raised by the secretariat, which has then usually provided management of the activity. The contributions of Pavel Sulyandziva (from RAIPON) and Vitaly Kimstach were crucial to the success of this project. For example, the secretariat has produced a number of reports for the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO) to support the evaluation of proposals for remedial actions at pollution “hot spots” in the Russian Barents Sea region.

In writing this book, I have aimed at the nonspecialist but have taken every opportunity to fully exploit the reader’s curiosity. My hope is that university undergraduates will take a close look at this story. The issues facing the Arctic are extraordinarily diverse and offer wonderful career opportunities. These range, for example, from international politics and the challenges of managing Arctic science and monitoring to atmospheric chemistry and physics, oceanography, wildlife, human health and toxicology.
